Cleodora’s deep breathing is calming.

I need calm. After yesterday’s ordeal, I could use a few days of peace. Maybe even a few weeks of it. Watching Cleodora fight a creature unlike anything I’ve ever seen while I stood in the parking lot has left me feeling on edge. No, it’s more than that. I’m feeling helpless. A vampire has no business stepping between two dragons… Or whatever that thing was. I could only stand and watch as Cleodora defended herself and destroyed one more threat Canaan sent her way.

I can’t believe he managed to possess a Councilman.

Well, perhaps I can. He’s done some horrible things and because Lagmire’s mind was so warped from using dark magic, it was probably relatively simple for the sphinx to infiltrate and watch everything going on through Lagmire’s eyes.

What else is Canaan capable of? A shiver of fear ripples through me as I sit up against the headboard and gently shake the bed. Beside me, Cleodora doesn’t move. Her deep breath continues without interruption as she sleeps. Unable to stop myself, I reach down and place my hand on her arm. I need the contact. Her life had been on the line again. The fact that I could do nothing makes the situation even worse. What if that thing killed her? As it is, killing it took a lot out of her. After falling asleep after dinner last night, she hasn’t woken back up. A full day has passed, and still, Cleo sleeps. I’m sure that Brenton was making an extra amount of noise while he and Suki made dinner for the others this evening, to see if he could wake her up. He didn’t accomplish his feat if that was his goal. Cleodora slept through dinner and dishes. What if the next attack drains her so badly that she never wakes back up? Is that possible?

Fear chokes me.

For a split second, I think about leaving for Maladh. I could steal Cleodora out of here with the others being none the wiser. They wouldn’t notice when I came back a moment later to grab Titus either. I could have them both in the car in under a minute. With Cleodora sleeping so soundly, she won’t fight me. Titus may when he realizes what I’ve done. I’d have to talk him into it, but maybe…

Cleodora’s soft groan brings me back to reality. I glance down at her face. Her brows are pulled together briefly before they relax, and she turns her body towards me.

I let the fantasy of running disperse. Running isn’t the answer. It never will be. Not for Cleodora, and certainly not for me. Whatever problems Cleodora has, I’ll be here by her side to face them with her. No matter how dangerous they are.

The sound of two sets of footsteps alerts me that my time watching over Cleodora has come to an end. The door to her bedroom opens. Suki strolls in first, followed by Candy. Both are dressed in their pajamas for the evening.
